I have not really been a proponent of bringing the late 80s and early 90s fashions back to modern day. I was never a fan of acid wash and I really hated stirrup pants (basically footless tights with a strap that went under your foot.) But colored tights are something I think I can wrap my head around. That is, if I have the proper guidance of course.

Wearing colored tights is more akin to ridiculously colored accessories than a clothing piece. They need to be coordinated with your outfit and accentuate great areas of your body not distract from that super cute top. So here is just one tip for wearing (and rocking!) a great pair of colored tights.

This one is the most important rule: always wear something over your tights. A skirt is always cute, even jeans are adorable, but don’t think you can get away with wearing only your tights. They’re not that attractive on their own. Think back to what I said about them being an accessory. Would you walk out of your home with only a bracelet on? I think not. I’m always tempted to softly whisper to the girls wearing only tights on the subway with a too-short tunic “Excuse me, I hate to point this out in public, but you forgot to put on pants today.”

Keep this in mind and you could be as long lasting in fashion as that great tie skirt sequence in Blossom!

Don’t worry there’s an easy way to keep it from getting any worse. If you keep a bottle of clear nail polish in your purse or bag, you can apply it liberally to the run and let it dry. This should keep it from getting any worse. If you don’t have clear nail polish, try using liberal amounts of hairspray instead. Just spray, let it dry, and spray again. This should keep it from being too noticeable. You might have to repeat the whole process more than once to get the run to stay in place.

If you’re really worried about getting a run, carry an extra pair of women’s pantyhose in your purse. That way you can just change them if the run gets too bad. You may also want to invest in a pair of tights that is “run proof.” These are made of stronger material and won’t get snags and runs.

Jackets not only will help me stay warm but they can add an extra layer of style to a dress. The scarves do the same thing. I can wear several different scarves and still be wearing the same dress but one can dress it up, while the other dresses it down. Lastly, colored tights can make it look like I have several different outfits instead of just the one.

So this year, armed with a bunch of accessories, I can proudly wear my little black dress to each and every one of my events this season!
